Welcome to the “Best/Favorite Films” blog. This is an ongoing project to list every movie this compiler appreciates by year. Every post has four sections:
Films listed in bold: Consider these the five-star films. The cream of the crop artistically – the most compelling, the most well-crafted; the best-films-of-all-time quality.
Films listed in italics: These are also huge favorites, including the slightly-less-than-ideal bests of the year and “light entertainments” that are nevertheless true classics for this compiler. These movies would earn 4 stars out of 5.
Films listed in regular type: These are films well worth revisiting. They range from the enjoyable to the flawed-but-worthy and to the films that just fall a little short of italicized status. 3 out of 5.
Still need to see: Movies that look very promising/intriguing, but that your compiler still needs to watch.
Not listed are the many movies that would get two stars (adequate, not awful films that simply aren’t worthy to view again), 1 star (the endless amount of substandard, unimaginative dreck and even worse) or zero stars (absolute bottom of the barrel, reprehensible garbage.)
Why the phrase “best/favorite”? Because this blogger acknowledges that these are lists of films of his choosing – in which an attempt is made to create an objective grouping of what truly are the “best” films, but at the same time knowing that these are this compiler’s personal opinions, the subjective favorites.
